Property Summary

This former miller’s cottage has been restored using traditional materials to provide a comfortable home, brimming with character and original features. Stone built with a stone tiled roof, the cottage boasts superb exposed timbers and original heavy wooden doors and floors throughout, complemented by simple, unassuming décor. Its location, in the heart of the Black Mountains yet near to a main trunk road, truly offers the best of both worlds.

The main entrance to the cottage has an unusual stone slab ‘hood’ over and leads into a substantial entrance hall/dining room featuring a flagstone floor and a perfectly preserved and historically important wooden screen dividing it from the kitchen next door. A ‘Clearview’ woodburning stove sits in an attractive inglenook with original bread oven and deep, curved oak mantel over. The kitchen, with a restored oak mullion window and painted floor, is fitted with a range of painted wood units with wooden workfaces over and contemporary tiled splashbacks. There is an integral dishwasher, built-in cooker with five-burner gas hob and ample space for appliances or further storage cupboards. Beyond the kitchen is a cosy family room, converted from a former lean-to barn, with another woodburning stove, wooden floor and French windows opening to the south-facing stone terrace and rear garden. A curved stone stairwell rises from the dining room to a spacious main bedroom with A-frame timbers and views across open fields. The inner hall leads to the bathroom with modern suite with bath and shower over, and a smaller bedroom, ideal for use as a study, nursery or dressing room.

Step Outside
Pontescob Cottage sits in a pleasant, level garden next to the Grwyne river. The cottage is approached off a quiet country lane through old stone walls along a path to the entrance door. A flagstone path leads along the side of the house to a stone terrace, an ideal spot to listen to the peaceful sound of the water tumbling past. The lower lawn has some apple trees, a wooden summerhouse and a stone wall which forms the boundary adjacent to the river. Lovely views are to be enjoyed across adjoining fields to the surrounding Welsh hills including the iconic Sugar Loaf Mountain, a short walk or drive away.

Location
Pontescob Cottage (which is the Welsh for Bishop’s Bridge, so-named because a Medieval bishop preached on the fording point or bridge) is a good example of little 17th century ‘end-entry’ miller’s cottage and is listed as such. Situated in the Black Mountains on the eastern side of the Brecon Beacons National Park, it was restored with traditional materials. The famous Celtic Partrishow church is a delightful walk away from the cottage, situated on the southern slopes of the Gader Range with a wonderful panoramic view of the lower Grwyne Fawr valley. The property is approximately 6 miles north of Abergavenny which offers a range of amenities including high street and independent shops, primary and secondary schools, doctors, dentists, a library, theatre and cinema. There are excellent road links nearby for commuting via the A465 south to the A40/A449 for links to the M4/M5 and M50 motorways and the A465 for the Heads of the Valleys. Abergavenny and Hereford have mainline railway stations for access to local and national routes.
