Property Summary

Pen y Dre Cottage, and its neighbour Ty Gwyn, were originally part of the same estate and both are believed locally to have been designed by John Nash in the early 19th century. Now Grade II listed the Cottage retains a feeling of history throughout.

Entering through the original porch with climbing plants and cast iron balustrade balcony above and bay windows to each side, the house feels surprisingly large. The living room off the hallway with stairs to one side features a well preserved bay window and extends the length of the house to French doors onto the garden. A gas log effect fire and traditional mantelpiece surround makes this a cosy room. To the left of the hallway the dining room retains the original exposed wooden floor with a further bay window overlooking the front. An original cupboard sits to the right of the fireplace with a small serving hatch connecting to the kitchen beyond. Many of the doors throughout are typical of the period and still have lovely detail and handles.

The kitchen overlooks the pretty garden. It has a small walk in pantry to one side and a good range of built in modern cupboards with laminate surfaces, free standing oven, hob and grill, stainless steel sink and drainer, plus space for a dishwasher and fridge. Further on is a utility room with plenty of room for a washing machine and tumble drier, well lit from a part clear panelled roof, with windows and door onto the garden. Leading off is a WC and a store room with original hearth and bread oven set into the wall. An internal door connects to the rear of the double garage with automatic doors and concrete floor.

On the first floor, two double bedrooms to the front of the house have a bay window each, connected by a landing with access to the balcony over the front porch. A further double bedroom has a beautiful bay window overlooking the rear garden with views to Crickhowell’s famous ‘Table Mountain’. From here a corridor links to an en-suite bathroom with bath and basin and a second bathroom with WC. Doors can be arranged to make each separate rooms. The top floor, probably the original servants’ rooms, are reached by a staircase behind a door to a landing with storage space, and two plain rooms with exposed roof beams to either side with a window in each.

Step Outside
To one side of the garden is a further substantial stone building with separate entrance – steps lead to a first floor room with great potential for a workshop, office or studio.

To the front of the house the garden is paved behind a low wall with iron railings with the garage to the left and side access to the right. The rear garden is flanked by herbaceous beds with a variety of shrubs and plants, whilst closer to the house is a paved terrace bordered by stone walls with the terraced garden up stone steps. The garden rises gently and tapers to a further wall with a brick built former stable taking up one corner.
